To say that narrative and its various devices have no effect on huma1 (rational or otherwise) is to completely ignore, well, all of recorded human history. Language, image, sound, and all other stimulation is i1idious. Rationality doesn’t factor into it unless we’re being critical about what it is we are engaging with, and that is exactly what can’t happen if we pass off our media and the portrayals therein as innocuous in relation to our unde1tanding of the world. Media is both reflective of the culture that produced it and encouraging of that culture’s behavio1. And continuing to misco1true mental illness (among so many other things) for a public already predisposed to misunde1tand it is in bad taste if not simply unacceptable.
